Lesson 69

David’s Sin with Bathsheba

Sin has consequences. We’re going to look at David’s sin by reviewing the Ten Commandments particularly the last five. I plan to look at how one sin led to another.

David:

Coveted another man’s wife.

Stole Bathsheba from her husband.

Commited Adultery with Bathsheba.

Lied – by deceiving Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband.

Arranged for Uriah to be placed at the front of a battle where he’d be more likely to be Killed.

Nathan the prophet tells David a parable of a poor man’s ewe lamb.

David is appalled at the rich man Nathan tells him the meaning of the parable. He also tells David that he will have trouble with his wives and children because of his sin.

David truly repents of his sin and God forgives him. David wrote Psalm 51 after this.

Memory Verse

Psalm 51 v 10

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Lesson 68

David and Mephibosheth

David is now  King of Judah in Hebron.

Ishbosheth, Saul’s son is King of Israel.

The Lord is with David, his power and influence increase while the power of Saul’s family decreases.

David is a just king, he wants to please God, he recognises that until God gives him the Kingdom of Israel it must be ruled by Saul’s ancestors. Others try to contrive ways to enable David to become king of Israel, David condemns them to death.

David remembers his promise to Jonathan many years before (1 Samuel 20 v14-15 and 42). He asks if any of Saul’s family are left so that he can show kindness towards them. He’s told of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son who was lame from childhood . David welcomes Mephibosheth into his home and provides for him.

Memory Verses

2 Samuel 9 v 7

So David said to him,”Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.
