David’s Deathbed Advice, Solomon’s Request

Lesson 68

David and Mephibosheth

David is now  King of Judah in Hebron.

Ishbosheth, Saul’s son is King of Israel.

The Lord is with David, his power and influence increase while the power of Saul’s family decreases.

David is a just king, he wants to please God, he recognises that until God gives him the Kingdom of Israel it must be ruled by Saul’s ancestors. Others try to contrive ways to enable David to become king of Israel, David condemns them to death.

David remembers his promise to Jonathan many years before (1 Samuel 20 v14-15 and 42). He asks if any of Saul’s family are left so that he can show kindness towards them. He’s told of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son who was lame from childhood . David welcomes Mephibosheth into his home and provides for him.

Saul continues to hunt David, David refuses to kill Saul

Lesson 64

Saul tries to kill David, but he escapes

Saul’s wicked heart- murder.

David- protected by God, God had chosen him to be king.

Friends- provided by God to help David- Jonathan and Michal.

Lesson 61

Saul, Israel’s First King is Rejected by God

1 Samuel 8 – 1 Samuel 15

1. Be careful what you ask for; Israel wanted a king to rule them instead of God. In spite of Samuel telling the consequences of this-service, taxation – loss of family, property, crops, herds – they were determined to disobey God.

2. Don’t judge by appearances, this was covered in Lesson 61. Saul was tall and handsome but appearance can be deceptive.

3. Samuel reminds Israel of all God has done for them. God punishes them by sending thunder and rain- they wanted to do things their own way and disobey God.

4. Saul is persistently disobedient. After a battle, Saul decides to offer a burnt offering to thank God, he’d forgotten God’s way, a priest was to sacrifice not a king.

During a battle Saul is again disobedient, he’s told to destroy the Amalekites, he didn’t, he kept the best of everything (covets) and let Agag the Amalekite king free . He lies to Samuel and blames others.

5. Samuel brings God’s message that God has rejected him and his family line. Saul’s family line would no longer be the kings of Israel.

Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.
But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.

Lesson 60

It’s Easter Sunday next week, so there won’t be Sunday School. Our lesson should be about Saul being chosen as king but I want to teach about the Lord Jesus Christ and what He accomplished by His death and resurrection too. so rather than using the Mayflower resource picture I made my own.

Saul, The First King Of Israel

The lesson will be

1. Saul appeared good and right on the outside but his heart was sinful and wrong.

2.God could see into King Saul’s heart and He sees our hearts.

The link to Easter, the Lord Jesus died on the cross to save his people from their sins and rose from the dead .

But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

1 smaller black(fill) heart shape with “but the Lord looks at the heart”attached and Jeremiah 17 v9

1 pink(fill) heart shape (the same size as the black heart) with the texts Luke 10 v 27 , 1 Peter 3 v18 and 1 Corinthians 15 v 3 – 4 .

I inserted the Bible verses into text boxes, cut them out, the children will glue the texts to the right heart (I numbered the texts and hearts beforehand) and then to the bigger heart.

The Lord’s Justice and Mercy

I wanted to include the destruction of Dagon, the Philistines’ god and Samuel setting up the stone Ebenezer, I found some pictures to illustrate Dagon’s demise and God’s punishment of those who’d taken the Ark here.

The lesson plans I use don’t include this so I had to improvise. I found a photograph of a large boulder, printed it then traced the outline with permanent marker, adding a few indentation lines of my own. I traced it, printed some labels with Ebenezer and its meaning, a DIY take home activity .
